First Aid Instructor Pathway

Red Cross Instructor Development Process

The Canadian Red Cross Instructor Development Program is a comprehensive program designed to prepare  instructors to support dynamic, learner-centred classroom environments. 


Once certified, you can apply to teach for various existing  Cnd Red Cross Training Partners throughout Canada or apply to the Cnd Red Cross for your own Training Partner agreement. Candidates with prior training or experience as Educators  (ex: Board of Education teachers) or those coming from other first aid agencies may transfer to Canadian Red Cross Instructor through a modified pathway.

Step 1: Skills and Pre-requisite Verification Module

  •  required by all candidates regardless of background, required at each new instructor level
  • traditional classroom format
  • time length varies on program you wish to teach

Confirm prerequisites are met: 

  • 18 years or older
  • have a valid participant certificate for the program (CPR, First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, Professional Responder, BLS etc..) you wish to teach

Pass Skills Assessment

  • Successfully complete a skills evaluation for the program you wish to teach

Step 2: Fundamentals of Instruction Module

  • taken only once in process of becoming an instructor
  • blended format (online self directed module 8hrs, in class traditional format 15hrs)

Content

  • program standards and code of behavior for Red Cross Instructors
  • teaching and learning strategies/ techniques, Red Cross philosophy of instruction, creating positive learning environments
  • assessing and evaluating students, communication and providing effective feedback
  • includes pre-course and in-class micro teaching teaching assignments

Pre-requisites

  • completion of Step 1 (Skills Verification Module) 
  • completion of online, self directed Fundamentals module within past 30dys

Step 3: Discipline Specific Module

  • taken for each discipline  / program area: First Aid and CPR, Wilderness and Remote First Aid, Professional Rescuer
  • traditional in classroom format (15hrs)

  • specific courses in each discipline
  • standards for each level  in discipline chosen
  • specific teaching strategies for content in discipline
  • electronic and physical resources for discipline
  • includes pre-course and in-class micro teaching assignments

Pre-requisites

  • completion of Steps 1 and 2
  • current provider level for discipline

Step 4: Teaching Experience Module

  • completed fro each new discipline / program area: First Aid and CPR, Wilderness and Remote First Aid, Professional Rescuer
  • blended format (self directed on-line module 1hrs, traditional classroom - varies)
  • must be completed within 1 yr of completing Discipline Specific module

Content

  • online module helps candidates prepare to complete their in-class teaching experience
  • in-class module has the instruction candidate teaching with a Teaching Experience Supervisor on an actual course within their new discipline, 3 attempts are permitted for this module 

Pre-requisites

  • completion of Step 3
  • completion of online teaching experience module 

Instructor Transfers

Two options exist for candidates with instructional training ad experience from another program / agency.
Option 1: Previous First Aid Instruction Experience

  • complete all modules EXCEPT the Discipline Specific module

Option 2: Previous experience as an educator or Red Cross Watersafety Instructor

  • complete all modules EXCEPT the in-class component of the Fundamentals of Instructions
  • must still complete the online module for the Fundamentals

  • eTrauma Module - the online prerequisite for the 8hr eCompleter courses, covers the theoretical and knowledge components of the ITLS course, can be taken as a stand-alone continuing education module or as the pre-requisite to the eCompleter to become certified in ITLS


  • eCompleter Module - provides hands-on skills and scenarios in the traditional ITLS course, includes the final written and practical testing required to earn the full ITLS certification
